[15:39] <Yaijinden> It might help to differentiate something.
[15:40] <Yaijinden> Religion is the system of social structures and encoded beliefs about how to behave in a universe that is such and such. Faith is the choice to take as granted something that is unproven.
[15:40] <Yaijinden> The former comes from the Greek "religio", which means "to connect."
[15:41] <Yaijinden> Religion, thus, is also the connection of people around a philosophy.
[15:42] <Yaijinden> If you'll permit an argument from authority, I've found that happiness is overrated. It's connection with one's fellow human beings that substantiates the true worth and value that can be found in life and living.
[15:43] <Katrina Nelson> No. I think Religion is the hope that they try to sell you the idea that you will be better off after *dying.* I reflected on the infinite vastness of the universe... how insignificant I really am, with the superclusters of galaxies careening about. I thought about how every culture had their own version of the afterlife and a deity who cared about them--philosophies that we dismiss, and always assume ours is correct? I realized that a supreme being who cared about me specifically almost certainly did not exist. And... the last bit of flickering flame that was alive in me went out.
