[10:59] <Fei Lin> First of all I've been training up on a new depertment at work, with the intention of taking on a few extra hours every week/.

[11:00] <Fei Lin> It's a little less free time, but it's a little more pay each week/month, which is a good thing right now, all things considered.
[11:01] <Fei Lin> I started on the extra shifts properly last week, and that seems like it'll work out okay.
[11:01] <Fei Lin> Two weeks ago was our family holiday, which was nice and relaxing.
[11:02] <Fei Lin> But two weeks before that was my Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award Final/Assessed Expedition, which was anything but.
[11:03] <LOVELYgirl> What's that?
[11:04] <Fei Lin> The Duke of Edinburgh's award is a scheme set up to give young people (14-25) something to do to get them active. It comprises 4 sections (5 at Gold), which are Service, Skill, Physical and Expedition (and Residential, at Gold).
[11:05] <LOVELYgirl> ...and what are you supposed to do?
[11:05] <Fei Lin> The first 3 are long-term projects, to be completed in increasing lengths of time as you rise through the award (3-6 months at Bronze, 6-12 at silver and 12-18 at Gold).
[11:06] <Fei Lin> But the expedition is a short-term, hard work part. For Gold, an expedition consists of walking between 80-95 km over 4 days, carrying everything you need for the entire time with you except fresh water.
[11:07] <Fei Lin> In my case, it was 86km, and the 'everything you need', when my water supplies were added on, weighed in at around 20kg.
[11:07] <Fei Lin> Which, given I only weigh around 55kg, is a pretty substantial proportion of my own body weight.
[11:11] <LOVELYgirl> And where were you? What kinds of land?
[11:13] <Fei Lin> We were in the Yorkshire Dales, so a mixture of hills, woods, and moors, with a decent helping of bog thrown in for good measure.
[11:14] <Fei Lin> Not helped by the weather.
[11:14] <Fei Lin> Our forecast went something along the lines of: Day 1, rain, some sunny spells; Day 2, sunshine, some showers; Day 3, remnants of Hurricane Bill. Although at least day 4 was dry, but by then we were already soaked.
[11:22] <LOVELYgirl> That's a nice place, though. I liked it when I was there.
[11:24] <Fei Lin> I've been there twice now (I did the Yorkshire Three Peaks a few years back), and I agree: it is a lovely place. Though It loses something when you're dripping wet and nearly lost.
[11:25] <Fei Lin> I say nerely lost, because our team was pretty good at improvising a way through difficulties, so we never actually went majorly off-course.

[11:29] <Fei Lin> It was exhausting physically, tiring mentally, but worth every soggy second.

[11:30] <Fei Lin> I've done my other expeditions, so that's a few other areas in the Uk, but never outside of it, at least, not yet.
[11:31] <Fei Lin> I'd love to go visiting places like Machu Pichu, the Great Wall, the war tunnels in the alps, and places like that, some day, though.
[11:32] <Fei Lin> Maybe one day, take a year out and take a crack at doing a single-year run on the Alpachian (sp?) Trail.
